The Comic Book Edition is the super hero theme for this year's Canstruction Greater Lehigh Valley event.
Once again, local companies in construction, design and architecture, engineering and other related fields are teaming up to build awareness of hunger by providing opportunities to display their artistic design and construction skills.
Canstruction is an international nonprofit that hosts competitions, exhibitions and events that feature artistic creations made entirely of canned food. These creations are then displayed at malls, museums, store fronts, large lobbies, convention centers and other spots.
All cans used to make the piece are then donated to local food banks to feed the hungry. These competitions are conducted year-round, with winners announced each May.
This year’s local event takes place at Lehigh Valley Mall in Whitehall Township from Oct. 6-20, with an awards ceremony Oct. 24 at the Second Harvest Food Bank on Silvercrest Road in East Allen Township. Participants build structures that reveal their favorite comic book characters, with all cans donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley and Northeast Pennsylvania.
Last year, Canstruction collected 32,229 canned food items and $1,300 in cash and gift cards to donate to the Second Harvest Food Bank.
Hats off to the design and industry pros from The American Institute of Architects, Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter and The Construction Specifications Institute, Greater Lehigh Valley Chapter for sponsoring the event.
What an awesome way to give back, using your talent to make a meaningful contribution to the community.
