We're about to hit one of the best times of the year for sports.

College football and the NFL are about to begin and baseball’s playoffs soon will follow. Plus, soon the NBA and NHL will open training camp.

It’s the perfect time to list some of the favorite phrases and sayings in sports:

Play ball!

And we have overtime in Game 7.

You are looking live from ...

They’re off!

Pitchers and catchers report.

Down the stretch they come!

And now, to sing our national anthem is Grammy winner ...

The drive down Magnolia Lane.

Gentlemen, start your engines. (If you like auto racing, that is.)

G-o-o-o-o-o-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l!

And March Madness is underway.

From Detroit, it’s Thanksgiving Day football.

And now, look skyward for a flyover by …

Personal favorite: Touchdown Penn State!

And a tribute to the late Harry Kalas: That ball is outta here!

RANDOM SHOTS AND SECOND THOUGHTS

-- If someone says he is humble, does that mean he really is not?

-- Good news: The 25th James Bond movie, “Bond 25,” will be released in November 2019. Daniel Craig, possibly by then using a walker, will star.

-- Guilty pleasure: Never seen as much as one minute of “Game of Thrones” or “The Walking Dead,” but I will cop to occasionally watching those “Real Housewives” reality shows. They have really good script writers.
