He’s crazy. He’s delusional. He’s a helicopter parent spiraling out of control.
That summarizes the opinion of many about LaVar Ball, father of likely top-three National Basketball Association draft pick Lonzo Ball and two other promising and younger hoop stars, LiAngelo and LaMelo Ball.
Yes, the old man has made some ridiculous comments, such as he could have beaten Michael Jordan one-on-one in basketball, and that Lonzo is better than LeBron James and Steph Curry.
But you can make a case that LaVar Ball is a good parent and not necessarily a lunatic.
He’s a family man, having kept his nuclear family intact. His wife Tina, mother of the three hoop stars, had a stroke in February, and LaVar has been taking care of her.
Years ago, Ball decided to raise the boys in the suburbs, a much better environment for them than the city life that he had to go through as a child.
He dedicated himself to his boys, particularly with respect to basketball. It has worked with Lonzo, who stands to be a millionaire by the fall.
LaVar Ball is a disciplinarian. You don’t see his kids in the news for doing bad things. Lonzo, during interviews with the media, seems to be well-adjusted.
This is not to say that LaVar Ball is father of the year, because who knows what really goes on inside a house. But from the 1,000-foot-view, the man is not the ogre that many think he is.
