Because of an increase in events and activities this year, ArtsQuest in Bethlehem said it will be hiring up to 300 people for part-time and seasonal jobs over the next few months.
Cindy Karchner, vice president of human resources for the arts organization, said that’s up about 10 percent over last year.
“The bulk of the jobs are retail merchandising and beverage servers, all customer service jobs,” she said.
Mark Demko, spokesman for ArtsQuest, said the organization has been consistently growing the past several years, and typically has employment growth each year, but this year it’s higher because of new events, including additional shows at the Levitt Pavilion Summer Series in Bethlehem.
Demko said the hiring is part of ArtsQuest’s mission to be an economic driver in the Lehigh Valley.
“Our goal is to increase access to the arts in the Lehigh Valley, and as you add events and classes and experiences, you need to have more staff,” he said.
While many of the jobs would span the summer season, Karchner said some – for example staffing Musikfest – may be for only a few weeks in length.
“Summer is our busiest hiring season. Between 50 and 60 percent of our events are during the summer months,” Demko said.
According to Karchner, she normally receives a diverse group of applicants for the jobs.
“Some of our best summer employees are teachers on break and also college and high school students. They come back year after year,” Karchner said.
