Spring has finally arrived. The trees are in full bloom, the warm air is sweeping across the region and most of us are gearing up for outdoor activities. And if you're anything like me and have a green thumb, you're eager to get out in your garden and start planting savory, organic vegetables.

While maybe not all of us are fortunate to have large backyards, there are several community gardens throughout the Greater Lehigh Valley that are available for growing your favorite crops.

And one new initiative in the area is aiming toward educating local youth on proper food preservation, storage and healthy dieting.

Sands Bethlehem is partnering with several organizations, including Penn State Extension, Lehigh and Northampton County 4-H, the Lynfield Community Center and the Community Action Development Corp. of Bethlehem, to create a 4-H Gardening Club near the Lynfield Community Center in South Bethlehem.

South Bethlehem is considered by the Census Bureau to be an impoverished area, so the local community, including Sands Bethlehem, is working to mitigate the effects of poverty by offering a safe and supportive place for kids to thrive. The 4-H Gardening Club is one of these efforts and should have a positive effect on the community for years to come.

An official announcement regarding the 4-H club is slated for 9 a.m. on May 6.

The community garden will be a 25-by-25-foot plot and offer programs for youth to learn about the benefits of gardening.

More information on how to get involved will be available following the official announcement. This blog will be updated, so check back following May 6 for details.
