Weis Market in Fogelsville was honored this morning as the Sunbury-based grocery chain's first store to be awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, certification.

Weis Markets Inc. has 204 stores in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia and West Virginia. The Weis Market at 7801 Glenlivet Drive West, opened in 2012.

Weis was recently awarded LEED silver certification for constructing a 65,800-square-foot building that addresses recycling water conservation and light pollution issues, as well as for its use of green building materials in its construction.

Christa Kraftician, a director with Spillman Farmer Architects in Bethlehem, presented Patti Olenick, sustainability manager at Weis Markets, with a plaque to recognize the achievement.
