Bethlehem Steel was iconic in shaping America's cities and driving the economy of the Greater Lehigh Valley. For more than a century, Bethlehem Steel served as the economic lifeblood of the community, employing tens of thousands of people and forging steel that built our nation's skyscrapers and bridges. After nearly 120 years, the plant ceased operations in 1995, closing forever. Rather than demolish the mill or let it fall apart, the community rallied around the iconic plant – saving the mammoth blast furnaces seen in some of these photos – to bring new life to the former industrial giant. Today, the campus is home to ArtsQuest, a nonprofit that promotes arts and culture in the city. (Photo/Christopher Holland)
