Olympus Corp. of the Americas in Center Valley announced this week it has reached a deal with Munich-based Brainlab Inc. to be the exclusive U.S. distributor of Kick Navigation, a software that guides and helps navigate physicians during complex ear, nose and throat surgeries.

The navigation software of Kick Navigation offers both optical and electromagnetic guidance options, giving surgeons advanced image enrichment and visualization during intricate surgeries.

The surgical navigation in Kick Navigation is also called image-guided surgery, computer-assisted surgery, or software-guided surgery and is similar in concept to a GPS navigation system. It is designed to continuously track surgical instrumentation relative to the patient’s anatomy and display the relationship in real time on a monitor during surgery. Navigational assistance becomes critical during complex ear, nose and throat surgeries where instruments are used in close proximity to the optical nerve, the brain and other sensitive tissues.

“Selecting Olympus as the exclusive distributor in the U.S. ear, nose and throat market for Kick Navigation was a natural choice,” said Sean Clark, president of Brainlab Inc. “Olympus has a significant presence and stellar reputation in the U.S. ear, nose and throat marketplace."

Brainlab develops, manufactures and markets software-driven medical technology, enabling access to advanced, less invasive patient treatments. Founded in Munich in 1989, Brainlab has more than 5,000 systems installed in 95 countries.

“Brainlab Kick systems are an important addition to our portfolio of ear, nose and throat surgical products,” said Richard Reynolds, executive vice president - sales, marketing and shared services of the Medical Systems Group at Olympus Corporation of the Americas.

Olympus Medical Systems Group, a division of Olympus, develops solutions for healthcare professionals that help improve clinical outcomes, reduce overall costs and enhance quality of life for their patients by enabling less invasive procedures.
