Allentown firm wins funding for technology to reduce gun violence

By ,

An early-stage Allentown technology startup has just been awarded funding for the development of smart-bullet technology.

Everlokt, which was formed to develop touch-entry technology for doors, is working on using that technology to create what it is calling Smart Access Ammunition technology.

It was awarded $50,000, with the potential for more funding, from a California group that had launched a Smart Tech “Million Dollar” Challenge for the development of technology aimed toward reducing gun violence that was formed in the wake of the 2012 school shooting in Sandy Hook, Conn.

“What we’re looking to do is to license the intellectual property to manufacturers, and maybe get involved in the manufacturing process in some form down the line,” said James McKeown, vice president for business development for the Everlokt Corp.

Different than a smart gun, the SAMMO smart access ammunition would keep ammunition from being fired by an unauthorized user, McKeown said.

He said some of the advantages of the product the company is developing are that the ammunition could be used with existing or new firearms and a user could switch between the smart ammunition and conventional ammunition in the same firearm.

“What we’re targeting first is home safety,” McKeown said.

He noted that if a child, for example, were to get a hold of a gun containing smart ammunition, he or she would not be able to fire it.

“With SAAMO, you are not only protecting your home from criminals, you are also protecting your loved ones from themselves by blocking the unauthorized discharge of your firearm,” said John Stein, Everlokt founder and CEO.

McKeown said the money Everlokt received from the Smart Tech for Firearms Challenge will go toward further developing the technology and bringing it to market.
