The Allentown Neighborhood Improvement Zone Development Authority is hosting a job fair today geared for Allentown residents seeking to work in the Neighborhood Improvement Zone in the city’s downtown.
Downtown Allentown employers will be on hand today in the Lehigh County Government Center, accepting applications, resumes and conducting on-the-spot interviews from 1-6:30 p.m. for all levels of management and service positions for the downtown’s new and existing businesses. That includes the PPL Center arena, which is home to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms professional ice hockey team, set to begin its inaugural season this fall.
Pennsylvania CareerLink Lehigh Valley and Lehigh Carbon Community College will be on site to provide assistance to jobseekers. The government center is at 17 S. Seventh St. in Allentown.
“We are the workforce system, so we have engulfed ourselves in helping to fill any openings, because we know how to do it,” Pennsylvania CareerLink Lehigh Valley’s executive director Nancy Dischinat said this morning.
Non-Allentown residents also are encouraged to come to the fair.
“We are absolutely not going to turn anyone away,” Dischinat said.
Dischinat said CareerLink has already helped to prepare about 2,000-3,000 Allentown residents for the downtown job fairs, including assisting with resumes and interviewing skills.
Another job fair is in the works and also will be open to the general public.
Employers seeking to fill positions at today’s job fair include Global Spectrums Arena, Ovation Food Services, Sacred Heart Health System, Allentown Parking Authority and Hamilton Kitchen & Bar. A lot of the jobs are part-time.
“This isn’t just a job fair,” Dischinat said. “It’s a plan.”
