Greater Lehigh Valley hospitals among the Most Wired

By ,

A number of hospitals in the region have made the American Hospital Association Health Care’s Most Wired list.

Doylestown Hospital in Doylestown, Grand View Hospital in Sellersville, Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, Reading Health System in West Reading and St. Luke’s University Health Network in Bethlehem all were named Most Wired, a list sponsored by the American Hospital Association.

Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg was named Most Improved.

St. Luke’s reacted to the honor.

“St. Luke’s has been ahead of the curve in implementing information systems and technology to support excellent delivery of care for our patients,” said Chad Brisendine, chief information officer for the network. He noted that in early 2013 St. Luke’s was the first health network in the Lehigh Valley to reach Stage 6 in the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model.

Lehigh Valley Health Network also has achieved Stage 6.

Only 14 percent of hospitals in the nation have achieved Stage 6.

Those who made the Most Wired list use electronic health records for such things as sharing information between departments and keeping track of patient medication.

Rich Umbdenstock, president and CEO of the American Hospital Association, said using electronic health information systems improves reliability, safety and the quality of care.

“The Most Wired data show that shared health information allows clinicians and patients to have the information they need to promote health and make the most informed decisions about treatments,” Umbdenstock said. “Hospitals, their clinicians and their communities are doing tremendous work to enhance their IT [information technology] systems in ways that support care and delivery improvement and patient engagement goals.”

The Most Wired survey, conducted between Jan. 15 and March 15, asked hospitals and health systems nationwide to answer questions regarding their IT initiatives. Respondents completed 680 surveys representing 1,900 hospitals, or more than 30 percent of all U.S. hospitals.
