Genesis Healthcare Lehigh Center in Lower Macungie Township and Genesis Healthcare Schuylkill Center in Pottsville welcomed the Pennsylvania Secretary of Health to their skilled nursing centers today.

This time, not for an inspection.

Michael Wolf today made an appearance at both facilities to present them with the state’s Excellence in Health Care Compliance award for having three consecutive years of operating a deficiency-free skilled nursing center. The two were among six of the more than 700 licensed skilled nursing centers in the state to receive the honor.

“We are held to certain standards in all facets of our business,” said Jeff Kahley, regional director of sales and marketing for Genesis Healthcare. “And we must maintain a high level of quality every day, in order to do well.”

The Lower Macungie campus of Genesis, on Spring Creek Road, was started in 1995 and admits more than 700 patients annually to its 128-bed skilled nursing facility, providing long-term and short-stay rehabilitative care for patients transitioning from a hospital.

The center also has a full-time cardiologist staff on-site, as well as a separate assisted senior living facility of 74 residents who can move back and forth between the two buildings, according to their health needs.

“Pennsylvania is home to some of the best care available, and it is our honor to showcase facilities that go above and beyond the call of duty for their residents,” Wolf said in a press release.

Genesis Schuylkill Center opened in 1990 on Schuylkill Manor Road in Pottsville and is a 190- bed facility that also includes a 32-bed Alzheimer’s unit.

“It’s a great honor to receive this award,” said John Gregis, executive administrator of Schuylkill Center. “We are very proud of the care that we give here.”

The Department of Health makes about 5,000 inspections annually, including licensure and certification surveys, follow-up surveys and complaint investigations.

Genesis Healthcare began in 1985 and today operates more than 400 skilled nursing centers in 26 states.

Of the six skilled nursing centers in the state to receive the award, three are Genesis Healthcare facilities. The third is Pennypack Center, just outside Philadelphia.
