Nine Lehigh Valley companies are testing, tasting and retasting in preparation for the Da Vinci Science Center's Ice Cream Wars 6.0 competition – a culinary event.

According to Dennis Zehner, ice cream commissioner for the event, nine Da Vinci Science Center partner companies – including defending champion PPL Corp. of Allentown – are perfecting ice cream recipes that will be activated with liquid nitrogen before visitors' eyes during the competition on Jan. 11 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

"This is an event that grows bigger and gets more popular every year," Zehner, a Da Vinci spokesman, said this morning. "This is the third year of an all-corporate format. Last year when we had it for the first time, we drew over 1,000 people in a single day."

Visitors can taste the ice cream concoctions and vote for their favorites. The corporate team that collects the most votes wins the annual Ice Cream Wars Championship – complete with a trophy to keep for a year, along with bragging rights.

Each Ice Cream Wars team works with a coach from the Da Vinci Science Center staff in advance of the competition. Some teams have been planning and practicing since October.

Seeking to dethrone PPL as Ice Cream Wars Champion are 401! Creative, a division of Weidenhammer Services Corp.; ATAS International Inc.; Avantor Performance Materials; B. Braun; Just Born; LSI Corp.; The Morning Call Media Group; and WFMZ 69 News.
