Doing what is right for the customer

Whether they’re offering health and life insurance policies for the employees of some of the Greater Lehigh Valley’s top firms or helping with individual and business financial planning, the insurance agencies on our Top 100 Private Companies list say strong customer service, knowledgeable staff and solid product offerings are keys to success.

These firms constantly search the marketplace to find the most suitable insurance and financial products and services available for their customers and help coordinate and customize them to their customers’ needs.

With changes on the horizon with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, these insurers need to ensure they are on the top of their game to make sure their customers – and their customers’ employees – have the stability and fiscal well-being they need to get their own jobs done.

HMK INSURANCE

WILLIAM C. KREITZ, PRESIDENT

BETHLEHEM

How did your company become a leader in the industry?

Implementing the guiding principles of our mission statement has enabled HMK to achieve a leadership position in our industry. These principles include always doing what is right for the customer and developing strong relationships with the carriers we represent.

Additionally, as a founding member of The Insurance Alliance of Central Pennsylvania, we strengthened the relationship with our insurance markets – which enables us to better serve our customers, and that’s our bottom line.

What is your company’s biggest challenge and how do you attack it?

One of the major challenges we face is to find quality people with an aptitude for insurance who are motivated to serve our customers. To accomplish this, we look for candidates that have gone onto higher education with either a two- or four-year degree.

When we bring in a new person, we create a work environment that encourages them to grow both professionally and personally. To support a newly hired person, we provide in-house training [and], mentoring and we encourage and enable all of our staff to attain professional insurance designations.

Why does your company call the Lehigh Valley home?

HMK has deep roots in the Lehigh Valley, having been founded in 1914 with the original office located on Main Street in Bethlehem. We find the Lehigh Valley a great place to do business. As the Valley has grown, it has allowed HMK to grow and prosper.

We are committed to supporting this community and are proud to have received the NCC [Northampton Community College] Fabric of the Community Award for the volunteer work done by our staff and HMK. It is part of our culture to give back to the community that has been so good to us.

What do you look for in hiring employees? And what is your training strategy/approach?

Our strategy is to hire the best people we can and provide them an opportunity and the support to grow professionally and personally. We are responsible for the leadership that creates an environment which helps people to move to the next level.

When one employee moves to the next level, the whole organization advances. One way we approach this is by leading the staff in book studies on personal and business development. We are firm believers in leading by example.

How do you define success for your company?

I have a saying in a frame on my office desk, “Success is a journey, not a destination.” Striving for success is ongoing and never-ending. Success is a byproduct of doing the right thing day after day.

We believe in building long-term relationships, based on trust, with our clients and our staff. If we do this, we will keep moving forward on the journey to success.
