Lehigh Valley International Airport today named a new air service destination for travelers.
Through its existing carrier Allegiant, LVIA will offer nonstop jet service to Punta Gorda Airport in southwest Florida, starting Oct. 31.
"It's a great development for the airport," said Tony Iannelli, chairman of the board of governors for the Lehigh Northampton Airport Authority.
LVIA will run the flights twice weekly between the Hanover Township, Lehigh County, airport and Punta Gorda Airport.
"This service will be Thursday-Sunday service," Iannelli said. "We are hugely optimistic in the amount of travelers in the Lehigh Valley that will make use of it."
Allegiant will introduce the service with fares starting at $99.99 one-way.
"Allegiant and the authority have been having conversations about what markets would make sense," said Charles Everett, the executive director of the airport authority. "This is probably the No. 1 destination that people have requested that we didn't have before."
Everett said that while it will start at two flights per week, he hopes the frequency will increase.
