Wegmans opened its new 15,000-square-foot addition at its store on Tilghman Street in Allentown today, and said another new feature, the Pub, will open in June.

The addition, which opened today, includes a new Market Café entrance, café seating area, lounge, children's activity/eating area, and an outdoor seating area with a fireplace. Wegmans will also remodel the upstairs eating area into a banquet/meeting facility open to the public, said Mike Kier, store manager.

Extra space means the grocery store is adding new staff.

"The plans are to add 50 folks to our team, most of which are going to be working in The Pub," said Kier.

Although a black curtain shielded The Pub from view as finishing touches are still being added, the space will feature an open kitchen concept and also include a restaurant menu, said Kier.

"We are in the training phase," said Kier.

The store now has a selection of over 1,200 beers, he added.

Once it's opened, The Pub can seat 130 people and in the expanded Market Café, 200 can be seated, as well as about 60 outside.

"Our customers are looking for a comfortable dining experience; this is much more comfortable now," said Kier.
