Mayfair, Allentown's annual festival of the arts, is picking up its paintbrushes and moving to a new location.
After 26 years flanking the banks of the Cedar Creek in Allentown's Cedar Beach Park, the festival – held in the oft-rainy month of May – hopes to find drier ground in the Allentown Fairgrounds just a few blocks away.
Arlene Daily, executive director of the festival, said weather always has been a big threat to the outdoor festival, and being located along the banks of the Little Lehigh, a little rain always turned Mayfair into mudfest.
She hopes the move will give the festival the best of both worlds.
"We'll still be an outdoor festival, and people can roam around and enjoy the spring air," said Daily. "This will give us indoor, climate controlled options in addition."
The new location will offer stages both outdoors and indoors, allowing for a broader range of performing arts.
"Some forms of staged art are difficult to hear outdoors," said Daily. "Theater, comedy, poetry and other performing arts will now be more enjoyable at Mayfair because we'll have an indoor stage."
She noted that the fairgrounds also has parking options that Mayfair didn't, allowing patrons to park on the ground's infield lot instead of having to extend out into surrounding neighborhoods such as with Mayfair.
This year's Mayfair will run May 24-27.
