Grades range from A's to C's at region's hospitals

By ,

Grades have been given out to some of the area's hospitals recognizing their commitment to patient safety via the Hospital Safety Score.

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits, has awarded Lehigh Valley Health Network A's for their flagship campus in Allentown as well as for their Muhlenberg campus.

The A score was awarded in the latest update to the Hospital Safety Score, the A, B, C, D or F scores assigned to U.S. hospitals based on preventable medical errors, injuries accidents, and infections.

"Hospitals like this that earn an A have demonstrated their commitment to their patients and their community," said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. "I congratulate Lehigh Valley Hospital and Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg for their safety excellence, and look forward to the day when all hospitals will match this standard."

"Our health network's priorities are for all of our physicians, nurses and staff to devote time to our patients by working together and trusting in each other as a team to deliver the highest quality care in the safest environment," said Ronald Swinfard, Lehigh Valley Health Network's president and CEO. "These A scores for hospital safety are evidence of the passion, expertise and compassion demonstrated by all of my colleagues in taking care of our community."

Also awarded grades were three of St. Luke's University Health Network's campuses: Bethlehem received a B; Quakertown was awarded an A; and Coaldale garnered a B. Additionally, Pocono Medical Center received a B; and Grand View Hospital in Sellersville and Palmerton Hospital in Palmerton were awarded Cs.

The Hospital Safety Score was compiled under the guidance of the nation's leading experts on patient safety and is designed to give the public information they can use to protect themselves and their families.
