A group comprised of the owners of 20 small Lehigh Valley businesses is funding a billboard campaign that encourages area residents to “shop local.”

The message will begin popping up Nov. 19 on three billboards located at Route 22 eastbound at Airport Road and Fullerton Avenue and Route 378 South in Bethlehem.

“(The billboards) are mainly to show our community that we need to support local businesses. We have so many great local businesses,” said Victoria Shparber, owner of the Black Forest Deli in Bethlehem.

The advertisements are the end result of donations from members of ShopLocalLV. The group raised the $9,000 needed to keep the advertising in place for one month.

“None of us can afford such a price, this was the only way to make this happen for us,” said Shparber, who hopes the group's efforts will “encourage other small businesses to think outside the box and see that anything is possible.”

Since this is the first time the group has purchased billboard space, they are unsure what the results will be.

But Shparber is hopeful.

“It's very exciting. We'll see how it goes. If it goes well, it could be an annual thing,” she said.
