The opening of a second Dan's Camera City was spurred by one major thing, owners said — traffic.

“With the construction on (Route) 22 over the next five years, our customers were having a hard time getting to our Allentown location. …it got us thinking,” said co-owner Mike Woodward at the ribbon cutting ceremony held today at the new location in Nazareth Crossing shopping center on the Easton-Nazareth Highway.

The process to find a new location began a year and a half ago, said Woodward, several deals fell through before they were able to finally settle in Nazareth.

“We're convinced this is a great location,” said co-owner Kevin Harayda

When fully staffed, the new 3,400-square-foot retail store and a 1,600-square-foot portrait studio, which is slated to open in two to three weeks, will employ 20 new workers. Dan's has more than 90 employees at the Allentown location.

Easton Mayor Sal Panto said he was glad a local business was bringing more jobs to Northampton County.

“As a former retail operator I know how hard it can be (to be successful,” Panto said. In addition to a retail space, the new location will offer classes where all levels of photography enthusiasts can learn about design, software and shooting techniques.

“We firmly believe that with taking pictures people do better when they're more comfortable,” Harayda said.

Frank Smith, business director with NAI Summit, who is also an amateur photographer, asked Woodward when they would open a third location.

“It will be quite some time before a third location; we have to recover from this one first. It took a good bit of work,” Woodward responded jokingly.
