Weis Markets said it has begun the construction of an environmentally innovative 65,000-square-foot superstore in Fogelsville. Poole Anderson Construction, State College, is the general contracting construction management firm. Construction should finish in early 2013. Dennis Curtain, a spokesman for Weis, declined to disclose the cost of the project.

When construction is completed, the store is expected to achieve U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification for measurably reducing or mitigating its environmental impact for sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, material selection and indoor environmental quality.

The Fogelsville unit will be Weis Markets' first LEED-certified store. The store is located at the intersection of Route 100 and Glenlivet Road.

Weis said the store will also incorporate advanced refrigeration technologies to reduce refrigerant emissions by 60 percent compared to the typical supermarket. The store will include an in-store café where beer is sold.
