Description Sustainability science is a field that deals with the interactions between natural and social systems. We donít normally think of people in this context, but the cost to employers due to lost time injury is one of the biggest burdens employers bear. Not to mention the lost time, reporting, insurance, and training costs.

After the establishment of The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in 1971, significant strides have led to a 66% reduction in work place fatalities, while during the same time the work force nearly doubled (according to the U. S. Department of Labor). However, annually there are still nearly 5,000 people who donít go home because of a death on the job; not to mention hundreds and thousands of injuries. In fact, from 2003 to 2015 the number of work place occupational injuries resulting in death has remained nearly stagnate.

The key to worker safety has always been a cause and effect relationship:

1 - Control the hazard to do your job safely.

2 - Go home safe every night.

Simple enough, but this is where ďsafety cultureĒ comes in. Going from having to work safely as a matter of the job description, to valuing being safe in every area of our lives. Whether you are a manufacturer of some type, a construction company, transportation, or a service provider there are simple steps that can be taken to heighten the awareness of all persons involved to create a safe, sustainable workforce.
